LAMENTATIONS

Lamentations begins with a question, “How?” The city of Jerusalem where God’s name dwells sits alone and as desolate as a widow with little visible hope. The author wants to know not only how this happened but also how the city might be restored. This tragic poem of the aftermath of Jerusalem’s destruction from Babylon is shaped in its first four chapters as a series of acrostic lines that follow the Hebrew alphabet one letter at a time.

At this time, the adversaries of God’s people prosper. God Himself has brought grief upon His people because of their many sins. Jerusalem’s strength is gone, and God seems like an enemy to His own people. They no longer teach the Torah, prophets no longer have visions from God, and the elders sit silently with dust on their heads. God acts according to His purposes as His word decrees, so the author asks God to remember his affliction. The book reads, “This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness” (Lam 3:21–23).

The destruction of Jerusalem ushers in a new season of waiting for God’s mercies to be made visible. God is good to those who wait for Him because God will not reject forever. Trusting God in this world requires a future hope because God scatters His people in exile among all the nations. God promises a day when punishment and discipline will end for His people. Yet the same punishment will spread to all nations. The final plea of the book calls out for God to renew and make visible His affection for His people. May God not forget them, and may He restore them to live life with Him.
